Lakehead University is receiving a $1 million donation for a program that mentors Indigenous high school students from Northwestern Ontario.
A spokesperson for the Joyce Family Foundation says it follows a grant request from LU.
Maureen O’Neill says the board felt the Aboriginal Mentorship Program was deserving of the funding.
It helps out Indigenous students at the elementary and high school level.
She says when looking into the program, the board felt it had lots of merit, was well structured, and had a great deal of success.
They felt it opens up future opportunities for the students and fits into the Foundation’s goal of supporting pathways to higher education for students in financial need.
