A pay hike for some of Ontario’s lowest wage earners takes effect Monday.
The minimum wage jumps to $14.00 an hour.
Thunder Bay-Atikokan MPP Bill Mauro says he understands there’s concerns about it from small businesses.
“I respect their their investment. I respect their risk taking. I respect greatly no pension plan, no holidays, no sick days. I get it,” says Mauro. “I represented their interests as best as I was able as we went down this path.
Mauro says there’s still the need to address issues like poorly paid or insecure work.
“There are a number of people who truly believe and from a government perspective we do, all parties actually are taking the same position, although somewhat slightly differentiated that is a different work environment out there. That there is a lot of precarious work and that we need to do something to address that.”
