A Justice of the Peace in Kenora has come under fire for comments made during a recent bail hearing.
According to court transcript, Justice Robert McNally said during the proceedings “Sometimes I think we are in the middle of a Benny Hill set here, nobody knows who Benny hill is.”
Shannon McDunnough, who is an aboriginal lawyer was attending the hearing as duty counsel and replied “I know Benny Hill”.
McNally acknowledged her by saying “your ancestors probably scalped him or something.”.
Separate complaints have since been filed by the Criminal Lawyers Association and McDunnough’s employers, Grand Council Treaty 3 and Nishnawbe Aski Legal Services.
The Criminal Lawyers Association says due to privacy concerns, it can’t discuss the matter any further.
