A roller-coaster of conditions weatherwise for the month of December.
Environment Canada Gerald Chang says above normal temperatures at the start of the month gave way to more normal, cooler days mid-month before warming to close out the year.
“If you look at the overall average,(it was) minus 5.5 C for the average daytime high compared to minus 6.8 C so we will certainly above average,” says Chang.
Total precipitation for the month was 30 millimetres, which accounts for melted snow.
That’s also below the norma.
Chang says that can be concerning to some.
“A lot of people don’t like snow because people have to drive through. I understand it’s a nuisance and it’s a hazard but at the same time some industries certainly need the snow and need that precipitation because so many people’s livelihoods depend on it.”
Chang says the dry trend could continue in January.
He says it will up to the jet stream to pull more storms and systems into the region to make up for the lack of precipitation experience in December.
