The town of Fort Frances is taking another approach to get more tax dollars from railway companies.
Town councillors have crafted a resolution they hope will find support from others municipalities, MPP’s, MP’s and municipal lobby groups in a call for a change to how railways are taxed in Ontario.
It’s now based on acres of land occupied.
Councillor Ken Perry would like it based on tons per mile as is done in western Canada.
He says the change could mean millions in extra dollars to town coffers alone.
Perry says a town delegation will be Toronto later this month to address the issue with provincial Finance Ministry officials at an upcoming municipal conference.
