The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry will soon have a new canine unit based out of Fort Frances for investigation purposes.
Conservation Officer Nick Lees is currently completing training with his dog Maya, a pointer, in southern Ontario.
Lees says she’s being training to identify things like gun power and various fish and wildlife that will help during investigations in the field.
He notes Maya is doing really well.
MNRF has long utilized dogs, but this will the first time a canine unit will be based in Fort Frances.
Lee says he and Maya expect to be ready for duty in October.
