A planned gold mine in the Atikokan area is moving another step in the process.
The Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency is seeking comment on a Comprehensive Study Report on Agnico Eagle’s Hammond Reef Gold Project.
The company’s proposing an open-pit operation with milling facilities.
In the study, the federal agency gives a favourable response, stating it doesn’t see any significant adverse effect to the environment.
Project Manager Bud Dickson says it is positive news.
“This is another step in the right direction for E.A. approval so it’s moving forward.”
The report also notes the company’s doing a good job working with the area’s Indigenous community, noting their support for the project.
Project Manager Bud Dickson acknowledges that as well.
“Metis region 1. The indigenous communities from Seine River, Lac La Croix, Lac Des Milles Lac, Nigigoonsiminikaaning, Couchiching, Stanjikoming, Rainy River First Nation, Naicatchewenin and Wabigoon. They have been patient with us.”
Dickson says they are still far from any construction taking place.
The provincial government still needs to comment as part of the EA process and the company’s reviewing historical data to get a better idea on the deposit identified.
