A former Olympic gold medalist in women’s hockey is using her experiences to help young people overcome their own obstacles.
Katie Weatherston was in Fort Frances this week visiting schools and helping out during a pre-season girls hockey camp for members of the Fort Frances Girls and Women’s Hockey Association.
Weatherston, who is originally from Thunder Bay, earned a gold medal while playing for Team Canada at the Turin Olympics in 2006.
She was also part of two World Women’s Hockey Championships, but her career was cut short by concussions.,
She now talks about her experiences and the challenges she faced as a way of encouraging young people to push through those trying times.
“Any journey to success there’s going to obstacles. There’s going to be roadblocks. It’s trying to teach these guys how to cope with those things, with obstacles and how to bounce back from them is super important.”
She doesn’t play at a high level any more but still takes to the ice to help other girls improve on their game as she did in Fort Frances.
“I love being on the ice with them. They are all smiles. Just being able to see those smiles every day and the excitement of the kids when they meet you and you show off the gold medal. It’s a great feeling.”
