The NDP are renewing their calls to hold a public inquiry into the selection of Ron Taverner as the next OPP commissioner.
The Integrity Commissioner submitted a report yesterday suggesting premier Doug Ford kept at arm’s length from the appointment.
But New Democrat leader Andrea Horwath says the report still raises plenty of questions about interference from the premier’s office.
“If you read the report, he makes it very clear that this process was deeply, deeply flaw and an inquiry could find answers,” says Horwath.
Minister of Community Safety and Correctional Services Sylvia Jones says the report still clears the Premier of any wrongdoing.
“I think it’s important to remind members of the House that the independent Integrity Commissioner did his job, the report has been tabled, the report has been made public and the Premier is 100% vindicated,” says Jones.
Taverner withdrew his name for contention for the OPP’s top job earlier this month.
The Ford Government then selected Thomas Carrique to fill the position.
