Fort Frances town council is still waiting on any new word about the future of the idled Resolute Forest Products mill.
Mayor June Caul says lobbying efforts continue though.
“We’re still lobbying the government for support and hope that.Mr. Yakabuski, the Minister of Natural Resources and Forestry, will finally step up to help us.
Councillor Doug Judson says no one should accept that this is a private business deal in which the public has no role.
He notes there is an ongoing discussion between the province and the corporate parties involved but the fight is far from over.
“After all our community and government have invested in this facility, we will not stand by while the private transaction threatens to strip the economic benefit of publicly owned forest resources from our district,” says Judson.
“I am pleased that so many local residents have invested their time and energy to try to present ideas and possibilities with regard to reopening the mill and establishing new business opportunities.
Caul says Rainy Rainy Packaging, formerly Repap Resources, is still interested in the mill despite Resolute rejecting its offer last week.
