The Royal Canadian Legion in Fort Frances is looking to make a crosswalk in front of its building more visible.
It’s proposing templates of soldiers at as a way of drawing attention to motorists of both the crosswalk and that it’s highly used by pedestrians going to the Legion.
President Ann Watson says there are little markings right now.
“As it stands there’s only two, small white lines across the road and a half of them aren’t there. There’s no hash marks,” says Watson.
The Legion asked the town two years ago to make improvements and nothing has yet happened.
“The signs that are up say ‘pedestrian crossing’ with an ‘x’ but nobody is seeing them. And the sign that’s above the crosswalk that’s supposed to be lit, to my knowledge, has not functioned for four years, if not longer,” says Watson.
Watson without proper markings, the crosswalk, has been a safety concern.
“My biggest fear is that one of our vets that’s not walking very fast and maybe not seeing as well as he should is going to come across that road and somebody’s not going to stop.”
The Legion’s request is to be discussed by a committee of town council next week.
