A program requiring emission testing on older passenger vehicles is officially over.
Environment Minister Rod Phillips says the Drive Clean program was effective when it was first introduced two decades ago.
“But as the years expired, so did its usefulness and Drive Clean no longer did the job it was intended,” says Phillips.
His Ministry says only five per cent of vehicle tested in 2017 received a failing grade.
Phillips says eliminating the program will save $40-million annually.
He adds the government is still committed to introducing a new program this falls targeting the road’s bigger polluters.
“As committed in our made-in-Ontario environment plan, our redesigned program will target the biggest polluters on the road, heavy-duty diesel trucks. This will ensure we’re reducing harmful pollutants while providing great value for the taxpayers.”
