You might be able to visit your local pharmacist if you can’t see a doctor or nurse practitioner in the near future.
The provincial government’s looking at expanded the scope of practice of pharmacists.
Health Minister Christine Elliott says discussions with the College of Physicians are underway.
Sometimes people aren’t able to get in to see their physician for example during the course of the day, but they can go in on weekends and evenings to see the pharmacist,” says Elliott. “If it’s a low-grade issue then we believe that there are certain things that pharmacists should be able to treat.”
Elliott says is still could be a year or so before that happens.
Expanding the role of pharmacists is not new.
The government gave them the right to flu shots to people 5 and older back in 2012.
