First Nations leaders in northwestern Ontario are ramping up efforts to pressure the government to relocate Kashechewan.
Rallies are taking place today at Parliament Hill as the remote community continues to be plagued by flooding.
Another protest was held at Queen’s Park on Monday.
Nishnawbe Aski Nation Deputy Grand Chief Derek Fox says Kashechewan continues to wait for the feds to fulfill promises to move them to a permanent new location.
“If Kashechewan were non-native, we’d have action already,” says Fox. “You see in Ottawa, the response is immediate. They pretty much call in the army to save everyone. Why is that?”
Kashechewan Chief Leo Friday also calling on both the feds and province to honour an agreement made three years ago to relocate his community to a higher ground.
Kashechewan has been evacuated every spring since 1976 because of severe flooding from the James Bay.
