Workers at Tim Hortons in Fort Frances are unionizing.
They’ve voted overwhelmingly in favour of joining the United Food and Commercial Workers Union.
The vote was held Tuesday and supervised by the Ontario Labour Relations Board.
The Union’s Ontario director Debora De Angelis says it was workers who approached them.
“There were some issues that they wanted addressed and reached out to UFCW,” says De Angelis. “In Ontario, a majority of the workers have to sign union cards and then five business days later there was a secret ballot vote.”
De Angelis cited favoritism, job security, benefits and a desire to take sick days among those concerns.
De Angelis says they now work toward a first contract.
She says workers will be providing input to shape what it may look like before negotiation with the store’s operator.
