Now that Spring has finally sprung, you may start seeing bears in your back yard.
Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry spokesperson Michelle Nowak says, “the late Spring across much of northern Ontario has meant natural food sources, such as grass and vegetation, have been delayed.”
She notes,”bears have been reported coming into urban areas and near residences in search of easily accessible foods, such as garbage and bird feeders.”
There have been no bear sightings yet in the town of Fort Frances.
Nowak says the Ministry Bear Wise Hotline (1-866-514-2327) is the first avenue to report a nuisance bear, and if it’s an immediate threat call 911.
She says non-urgent encounters include roaming around, checking garbage cans, breaking into a shed where garbage or food is stored, climbing a tree, pulling down a bird feeder, knocking over a barbeque or just walking around.
