The Ontario government is putting in place a rating system that determines who accessible building area.
It’s teaming up with the Rick Hansen Foundation to bring it’s Accessibility Certification program to the province.
It uses a rating system to evaluate commercial, institutional, and multi-unit residential buildings and sites.
A site can be certified as ‘RHF Accessibility Certified’ or ‘RHF Accessibility Certified Gold.’
Minister for Seniors and Accessibility Raymond Cho says 250 public facilities around the province will be reviewed to start.
“The program is expected to start this fall and roll out over the next two years in select communities across Ontario,” says Cho.
Rick Hansen says the review of 250 buildings will be able to provide some base line data toward that expansion.
“We want to be able to get enough deep data over the long term as we scale this up to have an annual index on our accessibility performance in the build environment,” says Hansen.
The province is also providing $1.3 million to the Foundation to help train certified inspectors who will conduct the building reviews.
