The mayor of Fort Frances is asking area residents to give to agencies with the expertise to help those with mental health, drug and alcohol addictions.
June Caul addressed the issue of safety in the downtown area at town council Monday night.
She says there’s been an increase in transient people to the community and people with addictions who don’t want to seek help.
She says it’s led to increases in human trafficking, prostitution, theft and violence.
Caul says it’s creating an atmosphere of fear that the downtown is not safe.
Caul, along with the members of the Fort Frances Downtown Business Improvement Association, Chamber of Commerce, health care providers and OPP, have been meeting to discuss a strategy.
With it, Caul asks people who want to help to support and donate to licensed facilities.
“Support facilities that have qualified mental health workers who can support those who are homeless or have addictions,” says Caul.
“All people residing in fort Frances permanently or for a short time deserve respect no matter what their lifestyle is,” adds Caul. Anyone who is down on their luck, those who may need a home and food for their family, and those who are trying to get a legitimate job to make ends meet deserve assistance. Those who find themselves addicted to drugs or alcohol deserve the opportunity to receive guidance and help to be in a healthy and safe environment.”
She also asked people to be vigilant by ensuring their doors are locked at night and walking with someone when out at night. Caul adds if you see criminal activity to contact police.
