The Ford government is hoping it is a step closer to allowing the sale of beer at corner stores.
It comes with the announcement from Finance Minister Vic Fedeli that the government has introduced legislation to break what he calls “the near monopoly” of the three major beer companies.
Fedeli points the finger of blame at the previous Liberal government and the deal it signed with the beer companies.
The finance minister indicates the contract is preventing the expansion of alcohol sales in the province.
He also suggests the government is prepared to go to court over the matter noting the legislation will also protect the Ontario taxpayer in the event of any lawsuit which results from the move.
The Beer Store says it’s prepared to take the issue to court.
