A number of parks along the Ontario-Minnesota border are seeking Dark Sky Designations from the Dark Sky Park Association.
Voyageurs National Park Superintendent Bob Degros says they’re bringing in an intern this summer to work on the applications.
“The primary focus of this is the land managers saying that we are going to assure that our facilities meet the requirements of trying to minimize the light pollution to the greatest extent possible, of course, keeping security and public movement in mind,” says Degros.
Voyageurs, Boundary Waters Canoe Area, Quetico Park and other smaller parks in northwestern Ontario are working jointly on the designation.
Degros says the designation will not impact on users of the parklands and there’s no requirement by neighbouring communities to make changes to their lighting in any way.
