A local pharmacist is informing seniors of the importance of getting rid of old medications.
David Schwartz, the pharmacy manager at Safeway in Fort Frances, was among those speaking at a senior’s fair at the Sister Kennedy Centre on Thursday.
He says seniors should be doing a regular review of the drugs they’re taking.
“Bring them all into the pharmacy and we would certainly like to sit down and talk to people up about all the medications make sure to be taken properly. Ask them if they know what they for. Ask them about when they should be taken,” says Schwartz.
Schwartz notes there’s a move recently by pharmacies to become more involved in a patient’s care.
He says medications are becoming more complex than ever before and is happy to take questions from patients.
“There’s a lot of interactions. There’s lots of questions about ‘Will this work for me, will not work for me?’ Or perhaps they’ve got some new medications and they want to know it will work with their old ones. There’s also lots of questions about things that are available over the counter as well,” says Schwartz.
Schwartz also spoke about the use of generic drugs and the shortages that are often experienced from time to time.
