The MPP for Kenora-Rainy River insists no teachers are losing their jobs as a result of changes in funding to education.
The Rainy River District School Board revealed in its budget this week the equivalent of 38 full-time positions across the system would be lost, in part, due to funding loss, enrolment declines and class size changes.
Last week, the local president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation identified the names of seven high school teachers who have been told they don’t have jobs in the fall.
Greg Rickford says no one will be losing their job.
“Some of this has to be sorted out with the school boards. There will be no cuts. In fact, the education budget was significantly increased and we’re protecting the teachers positions with an additional funds,” says Rickford.
The Board’s Superintendent of Business Laura Mills reported this week the board has not seen any of the money intended to protect teachers.
Rickford adds education is well funding and was increased for this budget year.
“I have very good relationships with the school boards in the district and their directors. We meet regularly to discuss to the challenges and the opportunities, and frankly I haven’t heard anything from any one of them that would indicate that teachers will lose their positions.”
