A group responsible for promoting an all-water route through northwestern Ontario will have a presence on it this summer.
The Path of the Paddle Association has hired two Wilderness Trail Stewards to canoe the route.
Association Chair Clara Butikofer says they’re also doing some maintenance, mapping and promotion of the 11-hundred kilometre route that goes from Thunder Bay to Kenora.
“The intention for these 2 employees is to be sent into our areas where we can’t get into ourselves on a daily basis,” says Butikofer.
Funding through the Canada Summer Jobs Program helped with their hire.
Part of the work includes installing new signage to reflect the name change of the Trans Canada Trail which the all-water route is a part.
It’s now known as the Great Trail.
Butikofer says they will also be do some GPS work along the way.
“We’re going to be developing a map, some really accurate maps from this and so if we get the GPS location of all of our signage that’ll help plus the tracking of the sections that they’ve gone on.”
The stewards will be on the job for eight weeks.
