An inspection of businesses who hire mainly young people is underway across the province.
It’s focusing on businesses like retail outlets, restaurants, bars, and recreational facilities, places who often hire summer students or offer that first-time job to a young person.
Labour Minister Monte McNaughton says ministry staff have been working with businesses to get them prepared for these expectations.
“And this is meant to be a heads up to businesses because every parent in Ontario deserves to expect their son or daughter will come home from their day at work,” says McNaughton.
Some of the focus for inspectors will be on workplaces that are newly registered with the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board and haven’t had a proactive health and safety visit in the last five years.
McNaughton says they want to make sure all workplaces are following the rule correctly.
“Our inspectors will check that new and young workers are properly trained and supervised on the job; are protected against heat stress; are protected against workplace violence or workplace harassment.”
A similar blitz last year resulted in over 76-hundred violations being cited and 116 orders to stop work made until corrective measures were taken.
The inspections are to continue across the province until the end of August.
