A chance to pursue a career in nursing without having to travel far for the education.
Lakehead University and Seven Generations Education Institute are teaming up to offer an All-Nation Nurses Entry program.
The course is being delivered at Lakehead’s Thunder Bay campus and available through Seven Generations’ campuses in Sioux Lookout, Kenora, and Fort Frances through videoconferencing.
The All-Nation Nurses Entry Program is a two-semester certificate program that provides students with the pre-requisites required to get into a nursing degree program specifically at Lakehead University,” says Brigitte Loeppky, Program Coordinator at Seven Generation Education Institute. “It also prepares the students to achieve the necessary skills to succeed in a degree program.”
Loeppky says the goal is also to have graduates stay and work in their home community.
“Growing your own nurses from your own communities addresses issues with recruitment. People will remain in their own communities and they understand the people in the community.”
Loeppky notes there is a serious shortage of nurses in northwestern Ontario and hopes this program will help fill the void.
The nine-month certificate program is designed to encourage Treaty Three members to pursue careers as Registered Nurses while remaining in their communities.
The course, though, open to Indigenous and non-Indigenous applicants.
Loeppky says their first cohort graduated in June and all of the graduates obtained employment as a practical nurse.
Applications are now being accepted for the program this September.
