The first cannabis store for the Rainy River district will likely be on Couchiching First Nation.
An application under the name ‘The Wasaw Store’ has been identified by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission as one of the eight allowed to set up stores on First Nation communities.
Chief Brian Perrault, who was in meetings in Winnipeg, was not immediately available to comment.
The Commission had previously announced licenses for stores in First Nation communities would be granted on a first-come/first-served basis and began accepting Intent to Apply applications at the end of July.
Wasaw’s application is the only one from northwestern Ontario to be included among the first eight.
The Commission is now allowing it and the seven others to complete other requirements, including applying for a Retail Operator Licence and Retail Store Authorization before they can officially open.
