Child care services run by the town of Fort Frances will come to an end at the end of September.
That’s because the Rainy River District Social Services Administration Board is expected to open its new centres by then.
Community Services Manager Jason Kabel says part of the closure process included giving 180-day notice to area schools board on agreements for the before and after school programs.
With the news from DSSAB, we had to get out of the business which meant getting out of the business in every fashion meaning ending our agreements with the school boards and as well ending our agreement with the province to run out of the centre,” says Kabel.
Services at the day centre on Portage Avenue will end on September 27. Official notice to staff was given earlier this month but Kabel says they’ve been up front about the future of the centre with them since the DSSAB announced its plans more than eighteen months ago.
A total of 36 employees are impacted by the change.
The future of the building on Portage Avenue is also uncertain.
Kabel says there’s been some interest.
“No definite plans for the building. It’s been in the community that the seniors have been looking at it as a potential option to move the senior’s centre into the building but there’s lots of discussion to happen before that decision is made.”
