There appears to have been some agreement reached between the town of Fort Frances and Riversedge Developments regarding taxes on the mill property.
Tuesday, the town placed a notice of seizure on certain assets saying over $489-thousand was owed.
Speaking to our newsroom, developer Justus Veldman would not disclose any details surrounding discussions with the town just yet.
“I think the town and ourselves at some point are going to come out a joint statement but at this point we’re positive and actually, the outcome is an even better working relationship so it’s okay,” says Veldman.
Veldman says the discussions were with the town’s Chief Administrative Officer Doug Brown. He has not spoken to Mayor June Caul. Caul complained earlier this week that she hadn’t heard from him in almost seven weeks.
Veldman notes that the taxes owed on the property were for this tax year and from the time he acquired the site from Resolute Forest Products in July until December.
He says there were no taxes owing prior.
