A new city sales tax in International Falls is set to be implemented in less than two weeks.
City council approved this week an agreement with the State Revenue department surrounding the tax.
City Administrator Ken Anderson says it will be the state administering the new tax and informing businesses.
“Because they already require businesses to submit the sales tax for state purposes and this would be an additional one and so they administer that whole program,” says Anderson.
“The way the revenue stream will work is there are some businesses that pay sales tax on a monthly basis, some that pay quarterly and some that only pay annually.”
Anderson says the agreement with the Department of Revenue outlines how funds will be returned to the city. There are also some requirements for the city.
“As part of this program, it requires certain staff to have access to the information. Before anybody with the city can have access to the information they have to complete a non-disclosure and disclosure agreement and training so that no unauthorized information is distributed to the public.”
Revenue from the one per tax will go toward infrastructure upgrades.
It will be in place for 30 years or until $30-million has been collected, whichever comes first.
