The Grand Chief of Treaty 3 is expressing his disappointment in the federal government’s decision to appeal a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal ruling impacting Indigenous children and their families impacted by the on-reserve child welfare system.
Francis Kavanaugh calls the government’s decision unacceptable.
Last month, the Tribunal awarded compensation of $40-thousand to each child impacted.
The Federal government wants a judicial review and the claim for compensation be dismissed.
Assembly of First Nations National Chief Perry Bellegarde says he’s extremely disappointed the government wants to bring the issue to court.
Bellegarde says to appeal the ruling in both hurtful and unjust.
