Science North’s latest THINK Hub is now open.
It’s located at the Fort Frances Public Library and is one of six Science North has set up across northern Ontario.
THINK stands for Tinker, Hack, Innovate, Network, and Know.
The Hub is designed to promote science, technology, engineering and mathematics through hands-on use of tools, materials and processes made available.
Science North Chief Executive Officer Guy Labine says it was a partnership with the local library that allowed it to open.
“And the inspiring people that we worked with. The amazing room – you’ve taken in fact an investment and I think made it even better,” says Labine.
Town councillor Andrew Hallikas says local input played a big part in getting the hub here.
“Last year, Science North flew our CEO (Caroline Goulding) to Sudbury so she could have input into the design and content of the interactive exhibits that will probably be a part of this library,” says Hallikas.
Northern Development Minister Greg Rickford joined with Grade 5 students from Robert Moore School to illustrate how the Hub works.
He notes the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund provided a million dollars to help the Hubs get established.
“And THINK adopted to highlight not only things that happen around the world but some of the uniqueness about our water, trees, rocks and the likes here,” says Rickford.
Other THINK Hubs are located in Kenora, Thunder Bay, North Bay, Sault Ste. Marie, and Timmins.
