UPDATE 12:30 PM
A major snowstorm is hitting the Fort Frances, Rainy River and Atikokan areas today.
Environment Canada Meteorologist Mitch Meredith says they’re issuing a snowfall warning and calling for 10 to 20 centimetres of snow today along with strong wind gusts.
He expects the snow to continue off and on Monday, with another 5 centimetres falling. Meredith also notes the wind is not expected to die down, resulting in more blowing snow and poor visibility for drivers.
Town of Fort Frances officials are declaring it a significant weather event, which they say could pose a risk to residents. Manager of Operations and Facilities Travis Rob is asking residents to limit their time on the roads and sidewalks.
Snow plows are at work on area highways, with no closures reported as of 12:30 this afternoon.
