Five northern Minnesota colleges will now operate under a new name.
The Board of Trustees of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities has approved a merger that includes Rainy River Community College in International Falls.
They will operate as Minnesota North College beginning May 23rd as a single accredited institution with six campuses.
It will also include Hibbing Community College, Itasca Community College in Grand Rapid, Mesabi Range College with campuses in Virginia and Eveleth, and Vermilion Community College in Ely.
“Operationally merging our institutions leverages the resources, talents, and marketability that comes with a larger, regional college yet maintains the long-cherished individual campus identities and community connections,” says Michael Raich, president of Minnesota North College.
The move to bring the colleges under one umbrella began a couple of years to combat declining enrollment.
Officials see the new Minnesota North College providing students with a greater selection of courses and career programs.
Essential student services, such as registration and financial aid, will still be provided at each local campus.
It is also expected to bring improved operational efficiencies.
“Students will benefit from a seamless educational experience along with expanded access to courses, programs, support services, and the team of experts that serve our six campuses,” says Raich. “Working regionally, Minnesota North College will be able to provide a comprehensive response to our business and industry partners, which aligns with our new vision of being a catalyst for regional prosperity.”
The first full cohort of students under the Minnesota North name will be this fall.
