The new K-12 school under construction in Atikokan has a name.
It will be called Northern Lakes K-12 School.
Trustees with the Rainy River District School Board were presented with two options to consider at their meeting Tuesday night.
A naming committee put forward Northern Lakes and Atikokan K-12 School for consideration.
Atikokan trustee Jeff Lehman says the committee preferred the Northern Lakes name.
Board Chair Raymond Roy says the name is fitting, with Atikokan’s proclamation as the Canoeing Capital of Canada.
The board received several suggestions from the public, including True North, Atikokan Voyageur School and Atikokan Community School.
The board is remodelling Atikokan High School to accommodate elementary students attending classes at North Star Community School and high school students under one roof.
The $26 million project was impacted recently by a provincewide carpenter’s strike, which has since been resolved.
Education Director Heather Campbell says despite the brief work stoppage, the project remains on schedule.
