The fishing is still a couple of weeks ago, but the big tent is going up in Rainy River this weekend.
Organizers with the Rainy River Walleye Fishing tournament are getting a jump on the set-up at Hannam Park tomorrow.
Committee member Richard Trenchard says the tent became available to them earlier, so they decided to take advantage and get it up early.
Trenchard says they are going to need some help.
“We need quite a bit of manpower to put the big poles up for the tent, of course, but there are lots of other little things that everyone can do. Come down and just help out with the little things that they can, or if you have some extra muscle, come down and help us push the big poles up,” says Trenchard.
Trenchard says they will feed everyone who helps out. They will also enticing them with a few incentives.
“We also will be doing a raffle for some free tickets for the shows on Friday and Saturday night. There’ll be other giveaways for all of the hard workers that come home and help us.”
The tournament begins on September 15.
There are about eighty teams registered so far.
Trenchard says without volunteers the tournament would not happen.
“We are only a small committee, about eight of us, so there’ll be no way we could run it on our own. We rely heavily on all on our volunteers and our sponsors that come out and give us a hand. Even the fishermen, they often come help to set up the tent and a few other things. That allows us to whittle away slowly at setting up the tent over the next three weeks to make sure that everything is set up perfectly the way we want. Us committee members meet each night at the tent and do what we can to get it up and ready to go for a big weekend.”
The work will begin at 8 a.m. on Saturday.
