The Shoal Lake #40 First Nation, west of Kenora, has filed a lawsuit against the City of Winnipeg and the Government Canada.
The lawsuit stems from the creation of an aqueduct to carry drinking water from Shoal Lake to Winnipeg.
The chief of the First Nation says even though the aqueduct was built in 1915, the community was never compensated.
Also, a canal was built making Shoal Lake #40 an island community.
While a road was finally built in 2019, the lawsuit says the waterworks continue to inflict long-term cultural, economic and social damages on the community.
While the amount of compensation has not been given, the First Nation is asking Winnipeg and the federal government to cover their legal costs.
