The work continues on new schools in the Rainy River District.
The Rainy River District School Board has three projects on the go.
Education Director Heather Campbell says they reached a milestone in Atikokan this month.
“We are really proud of Northern Lakes K-12 that is officially opened. All students are there, and the school looks amazing,” says Campbell.
The school board renovated the former Atikokan High School to accommodate elementary and secondary grade students at a cost of about $23 million.
Meantime, work continues on the new K-12 school in Rainy River to replace Rainy River High School and Riverview School.
Construction kicked off this summer with Education Minister Stephen Lecce in attendance and expected to take 18 months to complete.
The school board is also planning a new elementary school in Nestor Falls.
It will be a modular build, which will include two elementary classrooms and spaces for an activity room and library.
Campbell says they are completing the design work to have an order placed for the building this winter and construction taking place next year.
“We anticipate (it) will be opening around the same time as the Rainy River K-12 build. So, really busy, but all really positive changes to provide welcoming, state-of-the-art inclusive schools for our students and staff.”
