Testimony is now being heard in the Bernie Lynch trial.
The former head coach and general manager of the Fort Frances Lakers was charged in May 2021, stemming from an alleged incident in 1988 Regina in 1988.
Lynch was a coach with the Regina Pats of the Western Hockey League at the time.
Regina Police stated in a media release issued in May 2021 that “the alleged offender held a position of authority as a hockey coach, and it was through this position that he was introduced to the victim, who was 17 years old at the time.”
Media reports say Lynch has pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The charges came months after Lynch was let go from the Lakers in January 2021.
At the time, team officials did not explain the departure but stated that Hockey Canada was investigating.
The trial is expected to last all this week.
