The agency looking at the possibility of a nuclear storage site in the Ignace area says it is studying seismic activity recorded in the region.
There have been several small quakes in recent months around the Wabigoon Lake and Ignace areas.
None have measured over 3.0 magnitude.
Earthquake Canada says all were minor in nature and often never felt by anyone.
The Nuclear Waste Management Organization is not concerned.
Spokesperson Vince Ponka says the area targeted for a possible nuclear storage facility is a stable setting.
In an email to Acadia News, earthquakes are one of the factors they will consider in the final selection process.
“Earthquakes are one of several factors to be examined in the repository site evaluation process, and we’re undertaking microseismic monitoring in the Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation-Ignace area (as well as at the other site in the Saugeen Ojibway Nation-South Bruce area) to continue to learn about these events,” states Ponka.
He adds any storage facility to be constructed would be built to withstand the most severe quake.
The NWMO has yet to make a final decision on where it will build the facility.
