The Fort Frances Muskies high school hockey teams will play for NorWOSSA gold on Saturday.
The boys team defeated the Sioux North Warriors 5-2 at the Ice For Kids Arena to advance to the final against the Beaver Brae Broncos.
The girls team dominated play in their semi-final game for a 23-0 win over the Warriors.
Ozzie Hanson, Niko Ruppenstein and Ashton Velhuisen, with a shorthanded marker, scored in the final minutes of the first period to give the boys a 3-0 lead in their contest with the Warriors.
Jackson Carnaghan put Sioux North on the board five minutes into the second.
Veldhuisen restored the three-goal lead with his second of the evening with 13 minutes left in the third.
Sean Colen answered back for the Warriors three minutes later.
Willem Kirk rounded out the scoring with a breakaway goal with five minutes remaining in the third.
Klyde Laplante had three assists.
In the girls’ game, the Muskies did not score until midway through the first but ended the period with a 6-0 lead.
Bella Fry, with a pair, Marlee Bliss, Marissa Kenny, Kierra Fairnington and Karsyn McQuaker provided the scoring.
The Muskies took a commanding 17-0 lead in the second, with Bliss scoring three times, Courtney McCoy twice, and singles from Jerzi Calder, Ella Evans, Hayden Allam, Kenny, Isabelle Tanguay, and Fairnington.
Fry, McQuaker and Kenny each scored twice in the third period, with Avery Sinclair adding one other.
Fry finished the night with four goals and four assists for an eight-point night.
Bliss also had four goals while adding a pair of assists.
Danielle Schram was in the net for the win and registered her seventh shutout of the season.
The Muskies, who rolled through the regular season undefeated, will face off against the St. Thomas Aquinas Saints for the girl’s championship at 1:15 p.m. at the Ice for Kids Arena.
The Saints defeated the Dryden Eagles in the other semi-final game.
The boys will play the Beaver Brae Broncos immediately afterwards.
The Broncos upset the Red Lake Rams in their semi-final to advance.
