The St. Thomas Aquinas Saints have won their first-ever NorWOSSA championship in girls hockey.
A 4-0 win at the Ice for Kids Arena in Fort Frances on Saturday afternoon sends the Kenora team to the Ontario Federation of School Athletic Association’s AA girls hockey championship, beginning March 19th in Brooklin, north of Whitby.
The loss was the only one the Muskies suffered in NorWOSSA play this season.
This year’s NorWOSSA playoffs were reduced to single games for both the semi-finals played on Friday and the championship.
The game’s first goal came 6:30 remaining in the first period while the Saints were on the powerplay.
Sophie Muise grabbed a rebound and shot high over Muskies netminder Maddie Bliss, just seven seconds after the Muskies were tagged for having too many players on the ice.
The Muskies received a golden opportunity to tie the game when a Saints’ player received a five-minute major for kicking late in the second period.
However, the home team could not muster any good scoring chance with the advantage that was eventually nullified with a tripping call against them early in the third.
The Saints sealed the victory with 2:30 left in the third when Addy Greer banged in a loose puck to the right of the Muskies’ net.
Calleigh Greer and Reese Rody added late goals when the Muskies opted to pull their goalie in the remaining minutes.
Jordyn Moen picked up the shutout in net.
