Ontario’s Premier wants some protection for a province’s electric vehicle industry.
In a statement posted on Facebook, Doug Ford asks the federal government to impose tariffs on all Chinese imports, including a 100% hit to electric vehicles.
Ford claims China is flooding the market the cheap EVs by taking advantage of its low labour and energy standards.
He states Ontario and Canada risk losing jobs if it does not act quickly.
“Over the last four years, Ontario has secured $43 billion worth of investments in electric vehicle and battery manufacturing, securing hundreds of thousands of good, well-paying jobs. This has been an all-hands-on-deck achievement, working side-by-side with the federal government and our private-sector labour partners,” states Ford.
“We can never take our progress for granted. Our workers are the best in the world. As governments, we need to do everything in our power to protect their jobs and the paycheques they take home.”
Ford feels the Canadian government should consider tariffs on other Chinese imports equal to or greater than what the United States has put in place.
