The provincial government has announced a new contract at the largest biomass-fuelled plant in North America.
The province has announced a new five-year contract between the Ontario Power Generation and the Independent Electricity System Operator.
This will keep The Atikokan Generating Station operating at peak capacity.
The contract will protect 400 jobs at the station, help economic growth for the community, local mills and forestry operations that supply the facility, and provide affordable and reliable clean energy to Ontarians.
“By securing 400 well-paying jobs and supporting local forestry operations, we’re not only contributing to Ontario’s clean energy future but also providing economic stability for families in Atikokan,” said Associate Minister of Forestry and Forest Products and Thunder Bay – Atikokan MPP, Kevin Holland. “This agreement ensures our community will continue to play a key role in powering Ontario while utilizing sustainable resources and protecting our environment.”
The facility as a whole not only powers the province, and creates jobs in the local economy, but it also protects the environment.
Being the continent’s largest 100 per cent biomass facility it is also the largest consumer of industrial wood pellets in Canada.
The facility also utilizes wood waste that could have otherwise ended up in landfills.
