New Memory Lane Cafes are starting up in the Rainy River district.
The Alzheimer Society program provides a place for people in the early stages of dementia and their caregivers to relax and have fun.
Client Services Coordinator Mary O’Connor says it expands on a pilot conducted in Dryden.
“The idea is an outing that everybody can enjoy because quite often in the early stages of dementia, it’s really hard for caregivers to get out in the community and participate in things they used to participate in,” says O’Connor.
The Cafes will run once a month in Fort Frances and Atikokan.
They will take place at the Sister Kennedy Centre in Fort Frances from 1-3 p.m., the first Wednesday of every month starting November 6th.
Cafes in Atikokan will happen at the Pioneer Centre from 1-3 p.m. on the fourth Wednesday of every month starting November 27th.
“I have live music coming for the sessions that we have until March, and then everybody is going to be doing a craft. Sometimes we’re going to be doing the same craft. Sometimes we’re going to be painting on different things.”
Attendance is free, and you do not have to be connected to the Alzheimer Society to take part.
