Ontario is simplifying the steps seniors 80 and over must take to renew their driver’s license.
The requirement to complete vision and cognitive screenings will now be done at select ServiceOntario Centres on the day they renew.
Currently, drivers aged 80 and over must visit a separate location to complete the assessments before visiting ServiceOntario.
They will now receive a renewal notice by mail approximately 90 days before their licence expires, with instructions to book an appointment online or by phone.
They will complete the necessary assessments at their scheduled visit, and, if eligible, renew their driver’s licence on the spot.
“Ontario’s seniors deserve a convenient and accessible way to renew their driver’s licences, ensuring they can stay connected to their communities,” says Todd McCarthy, Minister of Public and Business Service Delivery and Procurement, in a release.
“Reaffirming Ontario’s commitment to enhancing customer service and supporting the needs of seniors, this new streamlined process eliminates the need for seniors to visit multiple locations, cutting wait times, expanding access to essential services, and creating a more inclusive and efficient system across the province.”
The change takes effect on February 3rd.
Drivers 80 and older still need to renew their license every two years.
As of 2022, there were nearly 400,000 drivers aged 80 and over in Ontario.
That number is expected to grow to about 700,000 by 2023.
