The provincial government has begun issuing rebate cheques to every resident in Ontario.
The $200 rebate is to help residents cope with the high cost of living, which the province says has been caused by the federal carbon tax and high interest rates.
“With Ontario families struggling due to the federal carbon tax, high interest rates and global economic uncertainty, our government is stepping up as part of our ongoing work to keep costs down and help families make ends meet,” states Peter Bethlenfalvy, Minister of Finance.
“Our prudent fiscal management means our government is able to provide this critical support for families even as we continue to improve Ontario’s finances and invest in our world-class public services.”
Anyone who filed their income taxes last year is eligible.
Those who filed for bankruptcy or were in prison will miss out.
Families who qualify for the Canada Child Benefit will receive a separate cheque of $200 for each child under 18.
Families who do not qualify for the benefit will also receive the rebate on behalf of their children.
The province says those details will be revealed at a later date.
The province has set up a link on the ServiceOntario website to monitor the progress of the cheques.
