Ontario’s Liberal leader is out with a promise to tackle the doctors shortages if she forms the next provincial government.
Launching her campaign in Barrie, Bonnie Crombie says her plan would help bring on 3,100 new family physicians.
She says the plan would be launched upon taking office.
“This is something a Liberal government would address on day one, not wait till the eve of an election to create a plan, make an announcement to address the crisis in our health care system.”
Crombie references Monday’s announcement by the province to spend $1.8 billion to expand family health teams, allowing every Ontario to have access to a family physician within four years.
Crombie says the Ford government had seven years to fix the problem but waited until the day before the election to make an announcement.
She says the money being spent on an early election could have been put to solving the shortage.
“We are here today because Doug Ford doesn’t care about you because he’s decided to spend $175 million on an early election that we don’t need rather than spending that money on getting you a family doctor or do anything to make your life a little easier.”
HealthForceOntario, which posts job openings for physicians, notes there are more than 2,500 physicians needed across the province.
