The U.S. trade dispute dominated day 6 of the provincial election campaign
NDP leader Marit Stiles used a stop in Oshawa to unveil her party’s plans to fight back against the U.S. trade tariffs.
It includes launching a Buy Ontario campaign, supporting a Team Canada response and protecting the province from tariffs.
“There’s no question Donald Trump’s tariffs are a direct and existential threat to Ontario, to our province, to our economy and our quality of life,” says Stiles.
“Ontario’s NDP have a plan to protect workers from the worst of the terrorists and to fight back. As premier, I will defend each and every single job in this province.”
Stiles says an NDP government will work with industries to help them find new Canadian and international markets.
‘She also plans to remove internal trade barriers to make it easier for companies to do business elsewhere in the country.
Liberal leader Bonnie Crombie spoke about her strategy to business leaders in Kitchener.
She says it would include a fund to help businesses affected
“The Fight Tariffs Fund, FTF. I like to call it the F Trump Fund,” says Crombie.
“This will provide Ontario businesses with access to cheaper interest rates for operational costs or capital investment so that they can borrow at government rates to help them keep workers or hire new ones as they grow.”
Crombie also promised to work with the federal government.
Green Party leader Mike Schreiner focused his attention on housing.
He is proposing a first-time home buyers plan and giving approval to the construction of four-plexes and four-story housing units.
“I want to see bold changes from our government, bold changes that mean that young people and all generations have the hope of owning their first home,” says Schreiner.
The provincial election takes place on February 27th.
