Doug Ford is scrapping a deal signed three months ago with Elon Musk’s Starlink to bring satellite Internet to remote areas of the province.
It is in response to the new trade tariffs imposed by U.S. President Donald Trump.
Musk was appointed to head Trump’s new Department of Government Efficiency.
“I’m not going to support someone that has hell-bent on destroying our province, destroying people’s families, taking jobs away from them. We’re done with that,” says Ford.
“We never started this fight whatsoever, but we’re going to win this fight.”
Ford also announced a ban on American firms from taking part in Ontario infrastructure projects.
“I want to make sure that we’re using Ontario steel, Canadian products, Canadian wood, Ontario wood, anything. I don’t care if it’s a toothpick we need to purchase from Canada and Ontario. That’s exactly what we’re going to do.”
Ford is hoping Ontario’s municipalities will follow his lead.
The retaliatory measures come on the heels of an announcement to remove all American-made alcohol from LCBO store shelves on Tuesday.
Ford feels Trump is attacking the wrong country.
“China’s the problem. Bringing in cheap goods into Mexico, slapping on made-in-Mexico stickers, shipping them up into Canada, costing American and Canadian jobs. That has to end. We need to protect Canada.”
Musk responded to Ford’s cancellation of the Starlink contract on X (formerly Twitter), simply stating ‘Oh, well.’
