Premier Doug Ford is calling his meeting with the U.S. Commerce Secretary productive.
Ford met with Howard Lutnick in Washington on Thursday with trade and the tariffs on the agenda.
Ford says there was no commitment to stop tariffs, but they are to meet again.
“We shared a tremendous amount of views back and forth, and I’m feeling very positive, and I just look forward to reaching out again next week,” says Ford.
“But this, I can honestly say it was the best meeting I’ve ever had coming down here.”
Lutnick invited Ford to Washington after the Ontario Premier imposed a 25% surcharge on electricity delivered to Michigan, New York and Minnesota.
Ford saw the gathering as an olive branch from the U.S. in the ongoing tariff threats and lifted the surcharge.
Despite receiving no assurances the U.S. would end its threats, Ford feels the temperature between Canada and the U.S. starting to lower.
“I just look forward to again continue communicating next week. We got a lot on the table back and forth, but it was very, very good, very civil, going back and forth. I just appreciate the opportunity, and I’m grateful that we’re able to do this rather than going back and forth tit for tat.”
